LEBANON: Solar power helps schools, hospitals | AKKAR, 29 October 2009 (IRIN Middle East) - In Lebanon’s remote northeastern district of Akkar, teachers and pupils at the Rajam Issa public school are hoping this winter will be the first when the lights stay on. “Electricity is the lifeline of the school,” said head teacher Ibrahim Salame, complaining of frequent and prolonged power cuts. full report

EGYPT: Pig cull hits livelihoods | CAIRO, 26 October 2009 (IRIN Middle East) - The Egyptian government's May 2009 decision to cull the country's entire pig population - ostensibly to stem the spread of H1N1 influenza - has hit the livelihoods of 70,000 former pig farmers and unofficial rubbish collectors and their families in the Cairo area, according to local NGO Association for the Protection of the Environment. full report
